<p class="MsoNoSpacing">‘We gaan ons, zo te horen, opmaken voor een stevig, principieel
debat in de Tweede Kamer over het voor en tegen van een referendum.’ </font>

<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Zo reageert het CDA-kamerlid Jan Schinkelshoek op
berichten als zou minister Ter Horst (binnenlandse zaken) sympathie hebben voor
het initiatiefvoorstel van PvdA, GroenLinks en D66 om een referendum in te
voeren.</font>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing"><o:p> </o:p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Binnenkort debatteert de Tweede Kamer voor de zoveelste
keer in een paar jaar over voorstellen om zowel een raadgevend als een
correctief referendum mogelijk te maken. Het CDA ‘wil maar niet enthousiast worden’
over een referendum, zoals Schinkelshoek onderkoeld formuleert. ‘Er zit een
fundamentele misvatting achter: dat meer democratie ook betere democratie oplevert.’</font>

<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Het CDA heeft volgens Schinkelshoek drie bezwaren tegen
het referendum, ‘een principiële, twee praktische’:</font>

Het parlement raakt het laatste woord kwijt. Het wordt gedegradeerd. De parlementaire democratie is ons
te veel waard om zo losjes mee om te springen.’</font><!--[endif]-->

schuin oog kijkt naar wat de kiezer wil - kan het bestuur vertragen en zelfs voor
jaren lam leggen. Het is een pracht van een alibi voor politici met slappe knieen die geen
impopulaire beslissingen durven nemen.’</font><!--[endif]-->

<p class="MsoNoSpacing">‘Laten we er niet aan beginnen’, adviseert Schinkelshoek.
‘Het is een ondermijning van een beproefd systeem, opgebouwd in meer dan
honderdvijftig jaar, dat van Nederland een stabiele democratie heeft gemaakt.
Daar moeten we zuinig op zijn.’</font>
